This morning I got to…(insert drum roll here)…50,887 words. I uploaded the document and the NaNoWriMo validation counter counted it slightly differently, so my NaNo final day word count was 50,921 words. I’m quite happy with that for 30 days of work.
This idea, with these characters, initially came to life during a writing course activity in 2010. Obviously I couldn’t include any previous attempts to start this story in my word count – but putting aside those failed attempts, changing viewpoint character and rewriting the key scenes with little time for further consideration has helped revive the story, which is very good for me.
‘Winning’ NaNo seems a little arbitrary – it was much, much easier to do it with all the pre-planning – and clear ideas of key scenes that have developed over months – than it was last year when I had no idea what I was writing about! In some respects last year’s 25,000 words with no preparation seems more worthy of congratulation as it relied completely on inspiration.
Still, I now have a new, fresh manuscript for a story I have failed to get successfully onto paper, with some odd little sub-plots and strange anomalies! Another 30,000 words and I’ll know if I can make all those oddities make sense!
Happy writing
EJ

Well done for getting there, EJ and congrats! 😉
Thank you – I got a certificate and everything, this is when I need a ‘yippee!’ button 😉
Oh – I’d LOVE a yippee button!
We should start a campaign!
