It occurred to me as I looked at my writing this month that I don’t have ‘Heroes’. I have good people, supportive people, morally aware people, but no Heroes with a capital H.
I am not talking comic book types here – no flying, or capes, or gadgets (however cool they may be!) – but real people who save the day despite the risks to themselves, the people who perform extraordinary feats for the good of others.
Then I got to wondering whether I have ‘heroes’ instead. With a small h.
So what makes a hero? Does a man who risks his own position to help another meet the definition? Or a woman who takes on responsibility for a grandchild? Or a child who takes responsibility for a sibling’s care?
Maybe they do. Maybe there is no real line between a good person and a hero, in that it depends on the viewpoint. If thanks to the generosity of another man, you were able to find a safe place in a harsh society, wouldn’t you see that as heroic? If your grandmother helped raise you, wouldn’t she be a hero? If your elder sister gave up their own freedom to ensure your wellbeing, wouldn’t you think of her sacrifice, and know her to be a hero?
So yes, I have heroes. No capital H, just real people doing their best to get through whatever circumstances I have caused them to experience, helping their loved ones and taking whatever steps they can to support them.
I like them better this way.
In project news – I’m still chipping away at the short stories, and now two of the new three are done, just one to go. I’ve also been working on ‘The Story of One,’ and doing some additional research on that. Today’s been pretty dull, work-wise!
The Codename Wedding Belles piece now has an anticipated completion date of mid-December to get it checked by the relevant people as it’s being read out in a ceremony, so I’ll work on poetry tomorrow plus this last short story; I hope to get CWB ticked off tomorrow as all I need to complete on it for this month is the structure – my target said I’d complete it; I should be clear and say that means complete the first full draft from notes as I’ll still be editing and revising it throughout November and early December!
So a reasonable day even if it wasn’t very exciting – I’m hoping for a good day tomorrow too, as Saturday I’m going to a posh frock event and won’t have a lot of time to work…
Happy writing
EJ
