I started this week with the best of intentions – cancelling arrangements so I could focus on poetry for the pamphlet competition, and give myself the best chance possible to do good work for submission. I started ok, but by Wednesday evening it was clear that not only was I not writing good poetry, but I did not even have the inspiration to write any poetry. After a chat with my sister about some memories we share, I wrote down some ideas and a few draft poems, but after less than an hour that too had run out of steam.
So – I succumbed to the siren voice of the novel and began editing again. Yes, it was an editing deja-vu.
I guess I should be pleased I managed a break of about three and a half weeks, but the novel gets in the way of doing other things. I have to decide if I want to only do that, or to continue with the poetry or do short story submissions, or a combination. Realistically trying to do everything means not succeeding at anything. For this week, I decided it was best just to go with the flow, and use editing as a solid use of time when I couldn’t write well, but I know that has to change.
However, with a significant improvement in the weather (hurrah!) I had a much more productive conclusion to the week, and I ended up writing the beginnings of about 17 new pieces of poetry. I now have to put aside the novel once more, and pull together these ideas into a cohesive set of work. And hope the sunshine remains or it’s back to travel programmes for me!
In other news – I had a quick look at the papers to see what was going on in the writing world this week, and although various pieces were interesting, my favourite was about the most (financially) successful authors. Sadly, the final sentence really hit home about the viability of writing as a career, and I can only say that it is my dream and it deserves to be followed for as long as possible. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/9272388/The-Millionaire-Authors-Club.html. I guess if nothing else this proves it can be done, with hard work, a good idea, luck – and a prevailing wind.
Until next time – happy writing, (and don’t worry about the earnings for today if you can help it!)
