Well it’s really week 4.5 but I hope you’ve had a fruitful week and a bit!
Having returned from my holiday field trip, which was extremely useful and enjoyable, I am now in the strange position of having two very different stories I want to make into full length novels. They are unrelated in style, structure and setting so I have made a decision to complete one, then the other, then return to the first for editing and improvements and so on. I don’t know if this will work but I will try! I’m glad I completed my scrapbook and took so many random pictures of dirt, flowers, rocks, buildings etc as a reference point; I have written up some sections for memory-jogging when I need it too!
I also enjoyed reading The Axe, The Shield and The Triton – it’s strange to read something that a friend has written but it was an engaging and entertaining book. It has definitely given me a boost to read it, and encouraged me to continue onwards in pursuit of a complete (and publishable) first novel!
This week, I have been looking after animals for friends and it has given me some scene-setting ideas. I have also decided to complete a short story for magazine submission, which has a set subject. This will be another milestone to pass – and by the point of submission I intend to have completed three chapters of my first book (about another 12,000 words). I haven’t been very focussed on other submissions so will also complete a further poem and short story in the same period of time. I did not meet my aim of completing a story before my field trip holiday but by setting targets I hope to get back on track.
So for this week, the moral of the story (so to speak!) is to acknowledge those times when you don’t meet your targets, learnt from it and move on. It doesn’t mean you can’t be a writer, it does mean you need a new time management technique!
Happy writing and enjoy the rest of your week!
